The Growing Problem of Mental Illness

The prevalence of mental health problems in the United States has been steadily increasing over the past 30 years. Today, over 50 million Americans are impacted by anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, and other illnesses. This translates to 1 in 5 adults currently living with a mental health disorder. Additionally, alarming rates of substance abuse often co-occur with psychiatric conditions. Suicide rates are also on the rise, now representing the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-34.

Yet, despite these growing numbers, healthcare systems are often undersupplied and underfunded to deal with this crisis. Low-income groups suffering from mental illness frequently lack access to consistent quality care. Additionally, social stigma is still attached to different psychiatric disorders, preventing many people from seeking help. Too often, those who are struggling with psychological problems feel isolated or ashamed due to misconceptions about mental health treatment.

As the need for psychiatric services grows, the gap in access and understanding is increasing as well. We firmly believe that new approaches are urgently required to confront the challenges of mental health care availability, affordability, and stigma.

Our business model is based on the provision of 4 essential online services – initial assessment, crisis counseling, short-term medication management, and case management and referrals. Our patients can receive treatment without waiting days or even months. In this way, we are saving thousands of lives every year. However, we always strive to make our impact even more extensive and positive.

By 2025, we plan to enroll over 100,000 new patients on our telemedicine platform. We will create a national online network of over 300 mental health peer support specialists by 2025. These individuals with lived experience will be trained to provide counseling, lead support groups, and help people in other ways. The peer model will build trust and empower communities.

We will expand our virtual therapy services to include additional modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Integrating these gold-standard treatments will allow us to help more people.
