What is a Social Enterprise?

Think of it as a business that does good. While most companies aim only to make money, a social enterprise also focuses on helping communities thrive. It is like a business with a heart – making profits but using them to create positive change.

Mental Health Social Enterprise Vision Banner

Our Vision

We envision a future where mental wellness is recognized as essential to health, seeking support is normalized, and everyone has access to community resources and care. Our company builds innovative systems that foster resilience, replace judgment with understanding, and promote mental health equity for all patients, regardless of their background, income, and other characteristics. Our vision is crucial, and we are moving closer to it each day.

The Growing Problem of Mental Illness

The prevalence of mental health problems in the United States has been steadily increasing over the past 30 years. Today, over 50 million Americans are impacted by anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, and other illnesses. This translates to 1 in 5 adults currently living with a mental health disorder. Additionally, alarming rates of substance abuse often co-occur with psychiatric conditions. Suicide rates are also on the rise, now representing the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-34.

Yet, despite these growing numbers, healthcare systems are often undersupplied and underfunded to deal with this crisis. Low-income groups suffering from mental illness frequently lack access to consistent quality care. Additionally, social stigma is still attached to different psychiatric disorders, preventing many people from seeking help. Too often, those who are struggling with psychological problems feel isolated or ashamed due to misconceptions about mental health treatment.
As the need for psychiatric services grows, the gap in access and understanding is increasing as well. We firmly believe that new approaches are urgently required to confront the challenges of mental health care availability, affordability, and stigma.
Our goal as a social enterprise is to drive innovative models of community-based treatment that can empower those who are the most impacted by this crisis. We aim to provide evidence-based care and reform systems to make mental wellness more equitable and accessible.

How Are Our Mental Health Services Helping Communities?

We recognize that transforming mental health care requires more than individual treatment – it demands a community-based approach. That is why UCMH aims to provide population-level solutions, not just person-to-person care. Our partnerships are based on this fundamental idea, which inspires us to make a meaningful social impact.

Icon Increased Access to Mental Health Services

By leveraging innovative digital health technologies, we can reach those who usually face barriers to mental health care. Through online assessments, referrals, counseling, and crisis support, UCMH serves vulnerable groups and helps them improve their psychological well-being.
We also train families and individuals to recognize signs of mental health distress and navigate support systems. Such education empowers people to care for one another. We aim to replace misconceptions with compassion and understanding.
While quality clinical care for individuals will always be central to UCMH’s online therapeutic services, our ultimate vision is to see stronger, more resilient communities of support for those facing psychiatric challenges. One of our primary goals is to create a self-sustaining social enterprise that would have a significant impact on the current crisis. We believe that integrating mental health resources across local settings and systems is the most transformational way to reach those in need.
Our business model is based on the provision of 4 essential online services – initial assessment, crisis counseling, short-term medication management, and case management and referrals. Our patients can receive treatment without waiting days or even months. In this way, we are saving thousands of lives every year. However, we always strive to make our impact even more extensive and positive.
